British Airways Devaluation: No More Short Haul Flights
Today, I received an email claiming that British Airways will be making some changes to their award structure and it’s not good news. The best and most valuable award category, the short haul flights that only costed 4,500 avios is taking a hit.
Here is the email of the change that goes into effect as of February 2, 2016:
The short haul flights are increasing from 4,500 avios to 7,500 avios. Which is an increase of 67% for any flights under 650 miles. I recently just used a short haul flight (4,500 avios) flying from SJC-RNO for a Lantern Festival. So this will definitely change my strategy for short hauls. Southwest is starting to look better for those quick domestic trips.
While overall this is bad news, on the bright side it seems this policy change is only in United States of America. As emphasized in the email “flights originating or terminating within the USA” will be affected. So internationally, British Airways will still be a great pick of the litter if your distance between the two destination is less than 650 miles.
If you were planning any short haul trips within the next year. I would start booking them before the devaluation takes place February 2, 2016.
