10 Best Avios Short Haul Redemptions
This year hasn’t been so great for British Airways and their Executive Club program. Earlier this year, there was a major devaluation in their award chart and many of their premium awards required more avios to book. This past month AMEX Membership Rewards decreased their transfer ratio to British Airways. Going from 1:1 to 250:200 ratio, which is a 20% decrease in points transfer. Now they are doing another devaluation this upcoming February 2016. Getting rid of the sweet spot of British Airways Award Chart, their short haul flights under 650 miles for only 4,500 avios.
Good news is that this devaluation is only applicable to flights originating or terminating in US. I’ve decided to show you some of the best 4,500 avios redemption that you can take advantage of before February 2, 2016.
1. *Alaska Airline flights Santa Rosa (STS) – Seattle (SEA) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
One of my favorite hidden short haul routes from the Bay area. Flights on this route normally cost around $130 one way. So you’re saving at least $124 one way. Don’t be confused by the picture above about how many miles it takes for this flight. This picture was taken from Alaska Airline website. I just wanted to show you that there is availability and the cost. Please read the note (*) below for more information on how to book this route.
2. American Airline flights New Orleans (MSY) – Charlotte (CLT) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
Distance between these two cities is actually 651 miles. However, they categorized it under the 650 miles. Thus, you are able to redeem it for only 4,500 Avios. Nonstop flights on this route easily go for $445 one way. That’s a whopping savings of $439 one-way on a domestic flight!
3. American Airline flights San Francisco (SFO) – Los Angeles (LAX) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
This is another one of my favorite short haul routes. Besides SFO you can fly out/to SJC as well for the same cost of points and taxes/fees. I’m a big Disney fan and sometimes love doing last-minute weekend trips. These easily cost upwards of like $200 for last-minute one way. However, with points I can save at least $194.
4. *Alaska Airline flights San Jose (SJC) – Salt Lake City (SLC) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
For those of you in the Bay Area that want to go for a snow trip to Salt Lake City during winter. This is a great route to take advantage. Flights on this route normally cost around $100 one way. So you’re saving at least $94 one way.
5. American Airline flights Los Angeles (LAX) – Las Vegas (LAS) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
The drive between the two cities is about 4 hours. We all know driving is not the way to go if you plan on doing a fun getaway to Sin City. This is for those who rather fly than drive. Flying on the peak days of Thu/Fri usually cost $100+ one way but with this you can save at least $94.
6. American Airline flights Miami (MIA) – Grand Cayman (GCM) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
For those that live in the Miami area. This upcoming devaluation takes a huge hit on a lot of Miami’s flights. As there are numerous international cities you can take advantage for only 4,5000 Avios. Here are some of my 3 favorite routes. This route retails for about $320 one way. Savings of at least $314.
7. American Airline flights Miami (MIA) – Cancun (CUN) (4,500 Avios + $25.32 taxes/fees)
While it’s not the normal $5.60 taxes/fees. The reason for this is because this is an international flight and some countries charge extra fees for flying into their country. Nonetheless one-way flight on this route goes for $305. Savings of at least $280 for an international flight.
8. American Airline flights Miami (MIA) – Montego Bay (MBJ) (4,500 Avios + $49.60 taxes/fees)
One more from Miami as this is a great value to take advantage of. Normal retail costs for this route is $215. So you’re saving about $165. Again for an international flight.
9. *Alaska Airlines flights Reno (RNO) – Seattle (SEA) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
I just helped my uncle book a flight on this route. Flights on this route normally cost around $123 one way. So you’re saving at least $117 one way.
10. American Airline flights New York (LGA) – Montreal (YUL) (4,500 Avios + $5.60 taxes/fees)
New York area actually has a lot of great routes. However, one that intrigued me the most had to be this route. As it’s not a domestic flight but an international flight. Flights on this route normally cost around $121 one way. So you’re saving at least $115 one way.
*Flights on Alaska Airline can only be booked on the phone with British Airways. In order to search flights for Alaska Airline the two best options would be to search for them either through Alaska Airline or American Airline website. If searching through Alaska and American, make sure the award you’re looking for is a nonstop flight. In addition, make sure that its showing “lower coach” or “MileSaver” award, respectively. Additionally, sometimes BA will attach a booking fee onto your reservation. Kindly ask them to waive based on the fact that this award flight was not bookable online. Usually they will waive it once you ask.
