Buying British Airway Miles for 50% Bonus
This morning, I received an email in regards to a promotional bonus that British Airways promoting. Today until February 25, 2015 you are allowed to buy up to 35,000 points and get 50% extra Avios on top of your purchase.
Here is a breakdown of all the options you can buy in.
[table id=4 /]
At best you are looking at buying in at 1.88 cents a point. Which to me is not a great value but this is still good if you ever need to top off your account for an award or take any last minute flights. This could save you some significant money rather than buying the ticket upfront.
For an example let’s say you had to take a last minute flight from San Jose (SJC) to Chicago (ORD) and needed to leave this Wednesday. The cheapest direct flight would be $484 and to redeem the same route you only need 10,000 avios. If you didn’t have 10,000 avios you can buy 10,000 Avios miles for only $218. Which easily saves you $261 (minus $5 tax on award ticket). Now imagine the savings you can do if you have to fly a family of 4 on the same flight.
I personally value Avios 1.5 cents a point and what is even great now. You have the potential to buy Avios at 1.43 cents a point. As mentioned in this Flyertalk Thread you can purchase Avios miles for 1.43 cents a share and all you have to do is change your address from USA to a European address and the currency rate is much lower if you buy in Euro. To me this is a great value and I would personally buy into it.
Now that you know the potential of Avios. Act fast since the promotion will only run until February 25, 2015.
