Trip Report: A $6 Road Trip to Lantern Fest in Reno
The Lantern Fest is an event where thousands of revelers join together armed with lanterns for one unforgettable spectacle. Historically lanterns were use to symbolize good fortune, request favorable weather, or to celebrate the life of a loved one. Rodalyn and I were able to take part in this event and we would say this had to be “one of the most unforgettable nights of our lives”. We got rocked out to classical music, eat a bunch of food, and ended our night by launching the lanterns. For those of you that wanted to get a glimpse of what we experienced. Here’s a short video made by youtuber, devinsupertramp, showcasing this amazing event.
Outbound route: SJC – RNO (Alaska Airlines)
Hotel: Courtyard Marriott Reno (2 nights)

Due to Rodalyn’s work schedule she wasn’t able to drive in with us from San Jose to Reno. However, the great thing about points is that you can book last-minute flights for cheap. I literally booked her flight on a Thursday, which was 2 days before actual departure day. It only costed us 4,500 avios + $5.20 flying on Alaska Airlines from SJC-RNO. A value of 5.13 cents a point. If we bought last-minute those tickets one-way would have costed us $236 + taxes/fees.
Instead of paying for hotel and splitting it. I agreed with my sister and her boyfriend that I can cover the hotel and in return they will cover the gas for our road trip. Which meant that I had to pay nothing. More money in my pocket since the hotel was booked on points (20,000 points) and a 1 free night certificate with Marriott.
